How the NetCFax server can be run securely on
XP Pro machines (with SP2)

BACK TO INDEX PAGE

Windows XP Pro provides a feature that make it a very useful and in fact powerful platform for hosting / running the NetCFax server securely, even though the fax server cannot (currently) be run as service.  We hope these notes will help you understand how to take advantage of the new features made available by XP Pro to run NetCFax.

Overview
Windows XP Pro provides a new feature Microsoft call "Fast Task Switching" (FTS) that actually uses what is known as "Windows Terminal Services" (WTS).

The FTS/WTS system lets you switch between different Windows login accounts on the same (XP Pro) machine without actually having to "log out" of the current account. This means that when you "switch users" using FTS/WTS, any software applications that were running under the previous account continue to run under that login account (alone).

This provides a perfect situation for the NetCFax server to be run in !

STEP 1
Use any Windows login account that has administrator rights (these rights are required to be able to run the NetCFax server) and start the NetCFax server.

STEP 2
Then click the Windows Start button and select "log off 'xxxxx'", and when the next small windows appears, click the "Switch User" button.

STEP 3
The screen will normally switch to a standard Windows XP full screen display showing all available Windows login accounts on this machine. You can choose to login to  any configured account simply by clicking on the account you want to use on this screen.  (Depending on the user configuration of that machine, you may also see the standard Windows Login dialog instead)

When you switch between these Windows login accounts using FTS/WTS, you do have actually logged out fully from the original administrator account that is still running the NetCFax server.

CONCLUSION
Assuming that the administrator account used to start NetCFax has a password set (Recommended), only those individuals who have the correct password can re-login to that account, an therefore nobody unauthorized can access the NetCFax server and make changes to its configuration or stop it running.

NOTES
You need to be aware that doing this does of course mean that any programs (as well as NetCFax) that were left running under that previous account ARE ALSO STILL RUNNING when you use the FTS/WTS system to login to Windows XP with another account.

IMPORTANT NOTE - The NetCFax server can ONLY be run under a Windows login account that has administrator access rights on any NT based version of Windows.  Neither "Power User" accounts or "Limited/Restricted" accounts are allowed to start or run the fax server.

The fax client can of course be run on this same machine under any individual login account irrespective of it's Windows login access rights.

Please note that with the release of 2.70 and Pro 3.10 multiple instances of the fax client can be running at any one time in different Windows login accounts under this environment, so everyone using it can if they wish have their own fax client running whenever they return to their Windows login account using Fast Task Switching.
