- We will be shipping upgrades
to all
releases of all NetCFax versions by the end of February 2007
that will fully support Windows Vista...
All
new installations of NetCFax using builds dated January 31,
2007
or later already have limited support for Windows Vista
Firstly, the initial releases of Windows Vista
are basically bigger
(and although it is of course a subjective
decision, better) Windows XP system, and not a Windows Server
system, such as 2000/2003 server.
The latest releases of the NetCFax
Server have no problems at all running on Windows Vista, you just install
it when logged into Vista with Windows Administrator rights, set
up the Fax Server as a Windows Service (Pro and PRO+ systems only)
if you wish to do so, and run it as a Service, or as a Desktop
Application under a Windows account that does have Administrator
rights.
Installing and running the NetCFax
Fax Client on Windows
Vista.
The new windows Vista operating system has
additional (and in many peoples opinion, highly onerous and
unnecessary) "Account Control security" features built in to it, and
these can present some challenges to running software such as NetCFax
Client from accounts that do not
have Windows Administrator rights, or even those that do.
If you do intend to run the NetCFax
Client on Windows Vista
under Windows Login Accounts that do NOT have Administrator
rights, you may need to do a little extra work once
it has been installed on the Vista machine (by a login with
"so called" Windows Administrator rights of course). The reason for this is that Vista
sets the security on virtually all folders and files to the
following permissions ONLY, even though this is a completely
private NetCFax folder tree installed in the Microsoft approved
Program Files folder tree.
(Please see further down
for information on how to remove this unwanted and annoying Vista
UAC system, which we strongly recommend you consider doing if you
haven't done so already)
Normal settings (with UAC enabled)
READ & EXECUTE
List Folder Contents
READ
As you can see, the major omission in
these permissions is the obvious and necessary ability to WRITE
and DELETE files and/or folders.
Quite naturally, the NetCFax
Client, (like many
other programs) does of course write various
data to the disk in its own folder tree on a very regular basis, including updating its
configuration settings, writing log files, saving and
subsequently deleting temporary files etc. In fact, if you try to
start it under a "Normal" account and these permissions
have not been reset, the client simply will not run at all.
Therefore the following additional
rights/permissions on the NetCFax client installation folder tree
(only) are critical to its operation...
Modify
Write
Therefore it really is easiest to just
check the option to allow FULL CONTROL.
Although there may well be other folders
you need or want to reset the permissions on, we suggest that for the NetCFax
Client (only) you change the security
permissions on the main install folder of the NetCFax
client, and make
sure that when asked, you confirm that the are applied to all
subfolders and files within the main installation folder. (By
default, this is C:\Program Files\NetCFax Client)
To changes the permissions for the NetCFax
Client, just follow the
instructions below.
1 - Highlight the NetCFax
Client main
installation folder, right click and select Properties
2 - Select the "Security" tab on the property sheet.
3 - In the list at the top of this tab, select the group that
includes the normal users on that machine.
THIS IS USUALLY SHOWN as "Users (\MACHINE_NAME\Users)"
4 - Check the list at the bottom to see if
the Full Control option is ticked.
5 - If it is not checked - continue as follows...
6 - Click the Edit button below the top list
7 - Ensure that you select the same group in the list on the new window that
is
displayed.
8 - In the LOWER list, ensure that you have checked the "Full
control" option.
9 - Click the OK button to dismiss each of the Windows, but ensure
that when
you are prompted you check the option to apply these
permissions to all sub
folders and files.
THAT'S BASICALLY ALL THERE IS TO IT ………….
The NetCFax
client should now run
normally on the Vista machine even when being used by Windows login
accounts that only have "Normal" Windows access rights.
IMPORTANT - If you do not set these
permissions, you will have various error messages popped up by the
NetCFax
client, and the most
obvious indicator of the cause is to look at the activity log
pane. If this contains lines saying UNABLE TO WRITE LOG FILE or
similar, the WRITE, MODIFY and DELETE permissions are NOT SET
CORRECTLY. (Revisit the options specified above)
PLEASE NOTE
- You cannot get around this UAC system by using the "Run as Administrator" option
in Windows Vista to run either the Fax Service Controller or the
Fax Server Controller when you are logged in with
"Normal" access rights as despite your reasonable
expectations, this new Vista system still refuses to give you the
required Windows Administrator access rights unless you are
ALREADY LOGGED IN using an "administrator" account. It
seems to us
that this feature of
the Vista User Account Control system is not yet quite ready for general use !!
If you want to run the NetCFax
Windows Services Controller on Vista systems that still have the
UAC system enabled, you MUST ALWAYS do so by using the 'Run as
Administrator' context menu option, as you need full access rights
to even be able to simply query the status of a Windows
Service. The alternative is to just disable UAC totally (see
below)
FINALLY -
DO YOU (LIKE US) WANT TO DISABLE THIS LATEST ABOMINATION called '
User Account Control' altogether ?
Are you
(like us) really sick of being nagged at by Vista whenever you
want to do anything productive, like (quite unbelievably) running
a program such as NetCFax that doesn't actually have the name of
Microsoft on it?
If the answer is
Yes, you are really sick of it too, please read on...
Here is the low
down on how easy it is to disable this unacceptable and intrusive
monster quickly and easily, to let YOU regain normal control of
what is after all YOUR COMPUTER, not Microsoft's !
1 - Go to Start -
Control Panel - user accounts
2 - Click the
"Turn user account Control On or off" option
3 - UNCHECK the
option that is at the top labeled "Use User Account Control
(UAC) to help protect you computer" (Everybody falls around
laughing)
4 - Click OK
5 - Now, finally,
you are rid of it, although it is wholly possible that you may
have to restart Windows Vista before it takes effect, as always.
We hope this information has been helpful
