Windows Server 2000 and 2003 both
provide Windows Terminal services, more often called Remote
Desktop Protocol (RDP), or Remote Desktop Sessions
This system
lets all your networked PCs run a Remote Desktop session (on the
server machine), and they can
switch between these sessions without (necessarily) having to log out of the
previous account first.
This environment causes several
problems when attempting to print to the normal NetCPlus Fax
Client Printer driver,
as it is designed to be used when the client is running on the
same machine as the printer driver, and printing to that printer
will normally trigger the fax system to ask you for a name for the
file..
This cannot occur in a Remote
Desktop Session, as the fax client is actually running in what is
called an individual "Windows Machine", so to
overcome this issue, and with the release of 2.70 and Pro 3.10, we now
provide a new printer driver called the NetCFax Remote Printer
Driver. It is only
necessary to install this printer driver on a Windows "Server"
system that is providing RDP sessions to multiple clients,
as it uses a special process (a hook DLL to be technical) that provides
a file name for the file you are printing to it. However,
because the printer driver is remotely located (on the Server
machine) printing to it does NOT trigger the NetCFax system at all, as
it would normally have done on a stand alone fax client
installation. Instead, the NetCFax Remote Printer
will always create the faxable file totally in background, and it will store it in the
specified faxable files folder (normally the standard \PrinterFile
folder used by NetCFax, with a unique name created by adding a
number in the range 0000 - 9999 to the file name specified when
the printer was installed. In
use, all you have to do to send this "just printed" data as a fax, is to go
to the fax creation window, click the Select Fax button, and then
select the file (or files) you have just created, which will
normally always be at the bottom of the list of files in this
window. Please ensure you always check the option to select
faxes from the Remote printer folder in case it is not in the
standard location. To quickly view
these files in the fax viewer to ensure you have the correct one
you can just double click an entry, or you can use the "View
Fax" button, and you can add as many of them as you wish to
your fax wizard window's list using the "Add to Fax"
button. When you are all done, click the Close button,
complete the fax and send it.
If you have
installed the NetCFax client in this "Windows Server"
RDP environment, we strongly recommend that you also ensure you
UNINSTALL the original NetCFax Client printer to avoid clients
trying to use it accidentally, as it will almost certainly not
work !!!
