How to install the NetCFax client on machines that are members of a Windows Domain and will be used with standard access rights

BACK TO INDEX PAGE

Because Windows Domains provide more security, you need to take a few more steps when installing the NetCFax Client on such client machines.

Naturally, only those Windows login accounts with local Administrator or Domain Administrator rights can install the Fax Client at all.

Once the Fax Client has been installed, we STRONGLY recommend that the same Administrator login account should also ENSURE they start the client and perform the initial login of the Fax Client to the Fax Server.

Our experience has shown that you can get different results depending on the server version the Windows domain controller (WDC) is running under.  On W23K Servers, standard domain users with "Restricted rights" can use the Fax Client without any problems.  However, testing indicates that if the WDC is a W2000 server, you may need to provide the domain clients (windows) login accounts with power user rights. This is because for some reason, under both W23K and also XP, a "Restricted access" login account actually has the older style "Power users" rights anyway.

If you do not do follow these instructions when connecting to a W2K WDC machine, there is a good chance that the standard domain user will NOT BE ABLE TO CONNECT to the fax server until an administrator account has done so first. Thereafter, the standard domain user will have no further problems.

Equally on a domain client attached to a W2K WDC, you may also find that you cannot print to the NetCFax Client printer driver.  Setting the Windows access rights for that domain login account to a power user corrects this problem too.

We hope this information helps you install the fax client more easily under this environment ?
